GIFTS THAT REALLY SLEIGH – YOUR GUIDE FOR THE CANON FAN (ADVANCED)

With the list of features longer than your own gift list, buying professional equipment for the Canon fan can be a daunting task. The jargon itself can easily overwhelm, especially when you don’t have the expertise and there’s no context.

Because professionals likely use cameras as tools of their trade, it’s always good to check with them on their focus (e.g. landscape, studio, sports). This will determine the priorities that they will appreciate, and therefore the model that best suits their purpose. That said, at this level, every gift can easily become a valuable asset and investment to the expert photographer, so you can do no wrong.

Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Kit (EF 24 – 70 IS USM)

This is perfect for the recipient who’s just beginning his pro journey. The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV continues the heritage of the Mark III as a professional staple – and no wonder, as it’s an all-rounder. Not only does the best-selling camera have a 30.4 megapixel full-frame sensor, it is securely supported by a sophisticated 61-point autofocus system, 4k video shooting, 7fps burst rate, and smooth handling. It’s a versatile number that can adjust itself to many scenarios, and so remains a classic workhorse that doesn’t get outdated easily. The lens kit lets your eager friend start using their new toy immediately.

Don’t be shy to be their subject – Christmas lighting is often very flattering!

Canon EOS 5DS R (Body)

Here’s something we all understand – megapixels. And the Canon EOS 5DS R hits a glorious 50.6 in this area, outstripping the competition. Although that alone isn’t a determining factor in sharpness, with the right equipment, it captures the sharpest image possible on the market. What does this mean? In situations where details are precious, like landscape and nature, and where lighting graduations are important, like studio setups, this model is the perfect candidate. Well supported by other features like the Dual DIGIC 6 processor and full-frame sensor, your expression of Christmas love will be like all the pictures – super clear.

Sapa Valley, Northern Vietnam Photo Trip

This gift involves travelling, so it’s already a win. The Academy has arranged for Adrian Loh from Singapore Trekkers to bring you up to the cool (both literally as well as figuratively) rice terraces of Sapa. Take an overnight train ride up to the hilly terrain and witness the colourfully-garbed hill tribes that roam around town. Most importantly, Adrian will show you how to use the slow shutter to capture them beautifully, as they hawk their handmade crafts. He will also touch on the importance of lighting, and how to use them for various effects.
